Plaid Brooches
Plaid Brooches are the traditional method of fastening the plaid, cloak or shawl at the shoulder.
Kilt Pins
The Kilt Pin became fashionable in the 1800s and has continued to this day, universally worn on all kilts or kilted skirts.
Pins 72, 91, 96 and 213 represent designs based on The Claidhmhor (pronounced "claymore" and meaning "big sword"). The Claidhmhor was the original highlanders' sword and was often of incredibly large and heavy proportions requiring the use of both hands. The Scottish Clansman was a magnificent swordsman who spared no effort in finding the finest blades available, as evidenced by the number of Italian Ferrara and Toledo blades on ancient Claidhmhors and Broadswords in the hands of collectors and museums.
Pins 23, 57 and 92 show the Highland pracice of decorating the metal parts of their wearing apparel either by the use of precious metal or by Cairngorm stones, polished pebbles or jewels. This practice later extended to kilt pins.
Sgian Dubhs
Sgian Dubh is Gaelic for black ("dubh") dagger ("sgian"), as invariably the handle was carved from black bog oak, and perhaps, more subtly, the word "black" implies "secret" or "covert" as in "blackmail" or "blackmarket". Normally this weapon of last resort was concealed, only to be exhibited in the presence of a host out of courtesy, usually in the sock where it would be seen.
Sporrans
Hand made in Scotland in the traditional method, our sporrans are by far the best available in today's marketplace.
Belts and Buckles
Genuine leather belts, hand made in Scotland, with a choice of traditional or velcro closure. Our wide selection of buckles are the perfect compliment!
Welcome!
Welcome to Whigmaleeries' Online Store. We are open 24/7 and invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy your visit!
The Building
Whigmaleeries is located in one of the older buildings in Town, c1825. Over the years it has undergone many, many, changes. The outside bears little resemblance to the original building. During renovations to the interior in 2002, some hidden treasures were uncovered and they have been restored and very much add to the charm of the store. Whigmaleeries is located on the corner of Water and Commercial Streets - right beside the Royal Bank.
Using the 'Departments' at the left of the page is the easiest way to find your way around the store!
