Tartan Clothing & Accessories
Nova Scotia Tartan
In 1953, Mrs. Douglas Murray, President of the Halifax Weavers Guild, was commissioned by a local, Nova Scotian, sheep-breeders' association to produce a woollen panel illustrating the history of sheep shearing for an upcoming agricultural show. Mrs. Murray's panel featured, among other things, a shepherd wearing a kilt. Not wanting to show any favouritism to a particular clan, Mrs. Murray invented her own tartan, basing it on the colours of the Nova Scotia fla. The design was subsequently adopted as the official Nova Scotia tartan. The blue and white in the tartan stand for the sea, the greens represent the forests, red is for the royal lion on the Shield of Arms, and gold for the province's historic Royal Charter.
Pictou County Tartan
Designed by Whigmaleeries' Frances Buchan, the Pictou County Tartan was launched in April, 2007. The colours are representative of the County: green for our forests and land, blue for the ocean, gold for our beaches, red for our industries, white for our lighthouses and purple for The Scots.
